"They make us wear helmets and stuff but..."

Lancaster Newspapers has an article this morning about a new skatepark in Columbia. From what I can tell, bikes are not currently allowed but the article made it seem as if they were in consideration. There are pictures and a short video online and it looks legit, especially that mini. Let hit us this place letting them know that people are interested in supporting them from BMX.

  2. Already on top of it! Yazzie and I went yesterday to talk to the owner...he wasn't there but another dude that we talked to seemed real interested. We got the owners number and are probably going to get in contact with him this week. They have a whole second floor with NOTHING on it that is basically an open canvas for what they plan to make a bike room. I want to try and get together with a lot of people and discuss possible ideas for ways to fill the space! The only thing they seemed like they were really into building was a foam pit...the rest of the space is sort of up in the air. So if we give them enough ideas and really tell them what we want I think they'd build whatever.

  3. I'm hoping Ryan and I can meet up with the guy in at the park and possibly take some measurements. I have access to some CAD programs and could easily layout some different set ups without too much trouble. I think a wooden rhythm and some spine/quarter set ups would be dialed...something that sort of opens things up for multiple lines and transfers as opposed to just boring old back and forth riding would be key.

  4. I talked to the guy and he said the upstairs is like 10,000 sqf.. He said he wants to have it done in 3-4 weeks. I'd like to see a foam pit and a rhythm going in it.. I'd like to hear what ideas go into this plan to so if he sets up a meeting let me know.

  5. I'll keep everyone posted. I think Ryan and I are shooting for Wednesday if the guy is free. We checked out the space and its got a strip down the middle that has 25 foot ceilings and is a solid 20+ feet wide...then each side has what I would say is only 12 foot ceilings and are about 20 feet wide. I figured the middle would be great for big vert walls and rythms and spines and the foam pit area and then the sides you could have all kinds of goofy fun stuff to play around on, like maybe some smaller boxes and maybe even a sick pump track style stuff like Ray's has and maybe some super steep quarters and small wall rides and shit like that.

  7. Wow. Alright...Keep us posted Stoner. Sounds like there is some serious potential here...that could be a serious scene builder.

  8. I'll be sure to keep everyone informed. I am super excited about this deal. They seem very open to suggestions and ideas which is what we need in this area. I think if we can guaranty them a return on the investment to build a suitable bike room that we can be sure that everyone gets what they want out of the deal. I'll probably use the 717 Family site to post some ideas maybe of potential designs and as a place for people to post comments. I've been in the BMX scene for almost 15 years (and so has Ryan) and used to be part owner of Voodoo so I'm hoping that makes us come across to the guy as being intensly serious and knowledgible asset. I hope we don't talk to him and get blown off. I'd love to see something that brings the Lancaster/York BMX scene together and hopefully this can be the catalyst we need.
